Curriculum Overview for Year 6 Spring Term 2026
|
Dear Parents and Carers, Happy New Year from the Year 6 team! I hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays and you are ready for a busy Spring Term. Homework will continue to be set every Friday and will be due on a Thursday. Maths, reading or grammar homework will be given on Sats Companion. If your child completes spelling practise, the Literacy Gold website is also fantastic to be completing at home. When completing homework on Sats Companion, the expectation is that the children achieve 75% and above in the tasks set. They may be asked to complete a task again if they are scoring lower than this so that they have the extra practice. Please encourage your child to take their time and read questions carefully before attempting them. They may wish to do their working out first on a piece of paper or in a notebook before typing in the answer. Sats Companion is also a very useful revision tool and can be used to help your child practise areas that they are not confident in. Spelling Lists will be uploaded to Google Classroom and can be used as part of the children's homework. Children should practise their spelling words all fortnight to ensure that they have learnt the pattern and that they are confident writing the words. It is very important that the children practise their spelling on a regular basis as this is the only way that they are going to become more accurate spellers. Please encourage your child to practise the spelling pattern learnt over the course of the fortnight as well as use Literacy Gold regularly, to help them improve their ability to spell words correctly. In Year 6, reading is an essential part of our learning and we really want the children to become avid readers. We would like your child to read at home every night for at least 20 minutes. Please support your children with this as much as possible. Your child should be reading levelled texts following their AR reading level. If your child finds it difficult to select books, I am happy to make recommendations or help them to choose books at school. Please let myself or Mrs Newman know if you need any help with this. PE will still be on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Your child should wear their PE kit to school on these days. Please ensure your child wears an appropriate PE kit, which consists of: blue shorts, plain white T-shirt and plain white or black plimsolls or trainers. A plain navy tracksuit with a jumper and jogging bottoms is advisable for colder weather. Children should not wear large logos or brightly coloured outfits or shoes. School uniform: Dark grey trousers, skirt or pinafore dress. Black, blue, grey or white plain head covering (if worn). A coat should be in school every day as we go outside whatever the weather. Stud earrings are permitted but no other jewellery should be worn to school at any time. Correct school uniform and shoes should be worn at all times. Please follow the recent guidance for providing your child with a morning or after school healthy snack; please don’t send in crisps or biscuits. Children will also need to bring in a re-usable water bottle. This should be clearly named and brought into school full each morning and returned home at the end of the day. Please do not hesitate to come and speak to me about any worries or concerns, or if there is anything about which you require further information. Mr Brits |
