This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
|
We allocate up to one hour per week for a music lesson for both key stage 1 and key stage 2. This is based on the Charanga scheme for teaching Music. The Charanga lesson plans include regular opportunities for children to perform on musical instruments. We use glockenspiels and a range of percussion instruments within the Charanga lesson plans. We also have handbells available to be used within lessons as an alternative. Yr2 learn the recorder and yr4 learn the ukulele.
|
Part B: Co-curricular music
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
|
Music tuition, choirs and ensembles (outside of lesson time) · We have a school choir club taking place once a week at after school. The school choir is open to all children. · Our school choir performs at school events and sometimes in the commuity · We partner with the LA music hub who deliver 1-2-1 lessons to pupils who wish to learn an instrument privately but in school time. |
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
|
Musical events / musical performances We have attended the “Voice in a million” choir event for 3 years and plan to take the choir again this academic year. In this case, pupils participate in an arena along with many other choirs. Travel costs for this event are expected to be minimised by sharing coaches with other local attending schools. Children learn songs to perform as part of assemblies. Each class will perform at least two assemblies each academic year that will include a musical element. With our private music tuition provider, we hold at least one performance in an assembly where children learning instruments showcase their latest pieces. We have a year musical celebration each year in the form of Chalgrove’s Got Talent. |
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
|
We hope to create a school band made up of different KS2 musicians playing – and potentially composing – music together. |
